Our Engagement Part 3

Welcome to the third and final chapter of our engagement shoot. If you’re still following along, thank you and well done! These photos are supposed to tell the story of Jarrad’s proposal, which didn’t really happen on a windswept Tasmanian beach, but in a little Airbnb in Redland Bay in July 2021.

It was during a fairly wide-reaching and fast-spreading Covid outbreak, and Jarrad had escaped Sydney just in time in order to sit an exam. We had planned a few quiet days together before he headed back into New South Wales, and a lockdown with no end date. I started to suspect something was going on when I was packing and Jarrad asked me to “pack something really nice so we can get a nice photo together”. “How nice is ‘really nice’,” I said, and he showed me the suit and dress shoes he had packed.

The next morning, he insisted on getting a haircut before we left, and then very uncharacteristically ran out again to buy fancy cheese. The day was very nearly fraught with disaster: I hadn’t had the foresight to book us on the ferry to the island we were staying on, and when we did make it by the skin of our teeth, Jarrad had to find a way to expedite my getting ready without giving everything away, so as not to miss the sunset.

He had me set up our camera on our tripod, and set it on video mode. Just when I was starting to wonder if he’d completely lost it, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. My reply? “HOLY S*** ARE YOU SERIOUS?!” Jarrad still jokes that I haven’t actually said “yes” yet. A few days later, Jarrad headed back to Sydney. This engagement shoot was really such a gift, because it ended up being a long awaited celebration of a really exciting time in our lives that just got cut a little bit short.
